Year 7 pupils recently visited Fishbourne Roman Palace to supplement their Latin study and introduce elements of classical civilisation which they can study next year.
In a workshop on ‘Military Matters’, they examined genuine artefacts that revealed the links between ancient Britain and Rome that existed long before our island came under Roman rule. They also got the chance to try on the arms and armour of a Roman legionary and learn why the Roman war machine was unstoppable for many centuries.
The mosaics at Fishbourne were a real highlight and students marvelled at the advanced technology of the hypocaust system – Roman underfloor heating! The weather was certainly kind and made our lunch break in the Roman gardens a lovely experience.
