Archery

On Saturday 22 March, Claremont held our first Archery competition. We hosted 3 other Junior sections from Farnham Archers, Spelthorne Archers and Laleham Archery club, each club sending three archers (12 archers in total ) shooting a mixture of sighted recurve and barebow. Claremont’s team consisted of Comet (Y11), Rosie and LJ (Y9) all shooting Bearbow. All 3 shot fantastic rounds, each ending up with personal best scores, that saw amazing shooting. Overall the team came second, with Rosie 1st, Comet 2nd and LJ 3rd for highlights Bearbow score. A good day was had by our team and visitors alike and hopefully it will be the first of many competitions held at Claremont.

Football

Both Boys and Girls 1st XIs played under lights against Dunottar on a fantastic evening at Meadowbank, home of Dorking FC. Dunottar emerged victorious in both games on the night, but the occasion more than made up for the defeats. These fixtures were thoroughly enjoyed by players and spectators alike and will certainly look to be repeated in the future.

1st XI Girls Football vs Dunottar

It was an outstanding evening and the first time Claremont and Dunottar have hosted a game under lights at Dorking FC. The 1st XI girls were extremely excited and started the game brilliantly putting pressure on Dunottar early on in the game, with the majority of play being completed in the midfield. Possession jumped between the two teams consistently and there were some big tackles and interceptions from Eilidh F, Lexi W, and Maddi H. Claremont started to come under more and more pressure and Dunottar broke the deadlock with some great attacking play from the left side. The team spirit and tenacity throughout the game stood out with the girls never giving up and some great goals scored by Lily M. Player of the match went to Lily M for scoring a hattrick and thank you to all the pupils who supported the event from the stands!

1st XI Boys Football vs Dunottar

The 1st XI boys went into the game under lights against Dunottar having beaten them in the past two seasons and were keen on securing a third win. Dunottar started really quickly and played on the front foot straight away, putting Claremont under pressure and on the back foot early on. The game levelled out and both teams were effective at keeping possession and switching play to find the time and space to attack down the channels. The game was tight all the way up until Marcus R managed to score an outstanding left footed goal nestling in the top corner from a corner kick. Claremont defended extremely well with some top performances from George R, Luke H and Rohan B until they conceded in the final kick of the game. The game went to penalties and narrowly missed out on victory but an exhilarating game which was played in amazing spirit throughout. Well done to all the boys involved and, for some of them, their penultimate game for Claremont.

2nd XI v Claires Court

The final fixture of the season played in glorious sunshine, provided a spirited, well-matched encounter. Claires Court took the spoils 2-0, Claremont guilty of allowing the first scorer to run too far before shooting, the pitch largely to blame for the second, the ball taking a substantial bobble on a crusty surface.

Claremont battled hard but were beaten to the second ball too frequently. Up front Thomas H was a dynamo, with PoM Sam N forceful in defence. Claremont pressed hard for an equaliser after going down late in the first half but were unable to get enough shots away to challenge the home keeper. The second goal decided the tie, though time remained for an exciting final few minutes, had a Herzog cross and audacious heel flick from Jacob L not produced an outstanding save from the home keeper.

4th XI v Halliford

The 4th X1 football team played their last game of the season against Halliford and after a slow start started playing some nice football but were not able to find the goal. The opposition however managed to score goals in both halves, the game ending 4-0. MVP was Jude S.

U15B v Dunottar

A sedate game played at soporific pace in the balmy morning sunshine, saw Dunottar steal the spoils 3-2. Claremont led early through a well taken first time finish from Will M but were pegged back soon after by a visiting equaliser. History repeated itself in the second half, Adam K’s composed finish matched by the Dunottar team. Claremont were indebted to Felix who produced three exceptional saves but fell to a sucker punch late in the second half and ultimately to a fairly turgid defeat. PoM was the hard-working Rafferty B.

U13A

A game of two halves…that’s never been said before. Before the game, the instruction had been composure, take a touch, make a pass. The first half was…chaotic but an improvement on last week and the boys tried to do the right thing. However, a few lapses in concentration and tentative defence gifted Dunottar three soft goals. As the half dew to a close, fatigue set in and we defended ever more desperately but survived without more damage.

However, the second half saw a totally different game. Composure was indeed the word and the introductions of Lochy in central defence seemed to calm the nerves at the back and the ball was played every more certainly between defence, midfield and attack, with fluent flowing play switching from one side of the field to the other and creating opportunities to score. Eventually George made and excellent run from the right, beating his man and driving the ball into the bottom corner Giles, at left back was the architect of so many of the positive pieces of defence as well as attack and he ran himself into the ground for the well-deserved player of the game award.

The well-deserved goal was, unfortunately the only reward the boys got for an excellent, dominant second half performance, but this was a much improved performance and one the boys should be very proud of.

U13B

U13B having lost last week were determined to put in a better performance this week. Mr Draper demanded more intensity. Dunottar were in their half for the whole game. Claremont were first to everything and hassled at every opportunity. This was an excellent team performance.

U13C

U13C played Dunottar away and after a great solid defensive performance were level at half time. Unfortunately, in the second half a handball penalty was given against CFC and then they conceded two more goals, losing the match an undeserved 3-0. MPV Jay V.

U12C

Claremont U12C’s put in a strong performance in a well-matched 1-1 draw. Bertie opened the scoring with a cheeky goal, pouncing on a defensive error. Player of the Match Eryk was relentless in midfield, covering every inch of the pitch to support his team. Special mention to Miles, who stepped up in goal and delivered when the team needed him most. Claremont created plenty of chances but just lacked the final touch, while Dunottar’s standout defender repeatedly cleared danger and launched counterattacks—one of which led to their equalizer against the run of play. A deserved draw in a game of attack vs. defence—great effort from the team!

Lacrosse

U15B @ Nationals

The U15Bs had a challenging group for their morning games at Nationals. Bolstered by some U14 players however we managed 2 very good score lines against Berkhamstead and Putney. After a scrappy game against Downe House, we finished bottom of the pool and faced a strong St Swithun’s side in the Top 16 knockout round. Despite some fantastic saves by Freja (picked up on and complimented by the opposition coaches) we ended on the wrong side of the scoreline. We then went on to play in the plate QF against St Paul’s. Unfortunately, an extended lunch break did not do our energy levels any favours and St Paul’s came out firing. We ended the day on a loss despite some promising play at both ends of the field in the group stages and some standout moments from every player who attended.

U13B

The U13B lacrosse team had a fantastic day at the Coloma Cup; they showcased some excellent attacking play and powerful shooting from Poppy W. The team played well in the group stages and made it through to the semi-final of the cup! Unfortunately, they lost to a very strong St Cats team. Overall, it was a fantastic day for all involved and the team she be very proud of their performance.

U13C

The U13C team participated in the Coloma Cup last week. The team worked hard all day and had a great time in qualifying for the plate. They all worked hard as a team and did a great job carrying the ball down the pitch and in their defensive skills. Well done to all involved!

Rosslyn Park National Rugby Sevens

U14

An enjoyable but ultimately fruitless campaign at the Rosslyn Park National 7s, saw the Under 14 squad enjoy two emphatic wins, but these sandwich a frustrating loss to eventual group winners Birkenhead.

With group winners only progressing, Claremont’s second place fell just short, the slight drop in focus and belief in that second game offsetting some excellent work across the pool rounds.

The Royal Military School were well beaten 38-24 in a brisk opener, with the Cathedral School, Llandaff soundly defeated in the final match. Claremont ran themselves sideways down too many blind alleys in the decisive middle game and fell off a couple of tackles to allow the Birkenhead speedster to capitalise. Sevens can be brutal, the games short, sharp, and exhausting. This terrific band of brothers will learn from the adventure however – a little more composure, spread of the ball and support play both in attack and defence, the fine margin in this rapid-fire format.

Eden marshalled his troops and converted tries with precision. Giles was strong in midfield, Charlie abrasive around the park. Micah distributed well Oscar likewise, with Henry a tackling machine in the final game. James S was a handful, Hector and Jamie made good contributions, Max and Theo both bringing energy to their roles.

Thanks to the travelling posse of parents that supported the boys so well. They will no doubt concur that this was a great day out, a wonderful experience for the boys, a tale of what ifs…and that Claremont’s outstanding player on the day was leading try scorer Lucas.

U13

The U13 Rosslyn Park 7s tournament is on Friday 28 March – See next week’s Sports Round for a full report!

Tennis

Surrey tennis league – senior boys’ first league match

The Senior Boys played their first match in the Surrey Tennis League against ACS on a beautiful afternoon, with perfect weather making for an exciting day of tennis.

What an incredible match it was! Despite the team’s best efforts, we narrowly lost 3-1. The game featured some amazing rallies and impressive shots from both teams, with each set being keenly contested. Although the result didn’t go our way, the determination and skill displayed by all players was remarkable. A special mention goes to Leo S, Ben S-L, Nicky O, and Oliver R for their fantastic performances throughout the match. Well done, boys, and here’s to more thrilling matches ahead!

U13

The U13 Girls tennis doubles team won against Sutton High in the Surrey league to open up the season in style. Both pairs played exceptionally well winning three out of the four matches played and only dropping one set between them.
