Surrey Schools Acro Competition
Last Friday.- Junior and Senior school gymnasts had a fun day competing at the Surrey Schools Acro Competition. The pupils performed a pairs floor routine. For some of our pupils this was their first competition. The senior gymnasts placed 3rd overall, walking away with bronze medals. This is a fantastic result as they were competing in the U19 category, and all our pupils were in years 7-9. The Junior school also did fantastically and placed 4th overall in the U11 age group. Well done to both teams!
From humble beginnings this game evolved into a genuinely exciting nailbiter. Will M scored two well taken left foot finishes to twice pull back Ewell Castle leads. With the game finely poised, the competition for possession rose several notches, the game a collage of end to end half chances. Ewell stole the day with just two minutes to go, a well taken finish to crown a thoroughly enjoyable match. Skill was at a premium, effort and competitive spirit was terrific. Claremont owed keeper Felix D a debt, his superb performance all but stealing the day.
A brilliant sunny day finally arrived and suddenly the pitches were concrete hard and bumpy to boot. It didn’t exactly bode well for flowing football as no one could control the ball as it was more like a game for the pin ball wizard. The first half was a frenetic affair with no team gaining any control and the ball bouncing all over the place around the half way line. Effectively the four times the ball bounced towards either end a goal was scored, more from unlucky ricochet’s than from high skill. However, on a big pitch and in strong sunshine, both teams tired and the second half opened up into a more fluent game. Claremont’s lack of confidence in dealing with a defensive situation allowed three easy goals from Ewell, but from then, the boys battled hard and finally started to link up play, make accurate and positive passes and generally compete in every part of the pitch. A brilliant team effort scored their only goal of the half, but it was very much Claremont pressure in the final 15mins, without reward.
All in all, this was a frustrating game as simple defensive errors or indecisive decision-making allowed Ewell to get clear, The boys worked incredibly hard, and once again their passion to the final whistle was commendable.
The U13B team won 4 – 0. This was an impressive display from a team that has made huge improvements from the beginning of the season. The team held there structure well creating chance after chance. 3 goals from Roshi and 1 from Freddie put the game out of reach. The moment of the game goes to Zain who blocked a shot then acrobatically tipped the follow up over the bar.
A solid first half performance saw Claremont take a two-goal lead as a result of opportunistic finishes from Angus. David had a quiet game in goal, but an amazing double save helped to maintain our lead going into half time.
The second half started well, however Ewell Castle stepped up the pressure and scored early in the second half. Claremont worked hard but got a little sloppy and failed to increase their lead, despite a glut of chances. Will had a fantastic match, driving the ball out of defence and finding space on the wings to create attacking opportunities. Overall an great performance and a well-deserved win.
A frenzied finale to this frantic match saw Claremont hit the bar with the scores tied at 2-2, then just moments later, the visitors bundle in a free kick seconds before the final whistle. The wild celebrations were short lived however, an offside flag determining that the game ended all square after quite a battle. Claremont led through a looping Charlie R goal and extended their lead through Adam K’s well taken finish, to turn around with a double advantage at the interval. The testing wind now favoured Emanuel, who soon pulled one back, then levelled the tie, now looking the more likely to finish the job. Claremont dug in however, Alfie M leading a belligerent defence, Felix D again alive and willing in goal, before the dramatic denouement, Adam K grazing the crossbar with a long range shot that appeared suspended in time, the disallowed goal signalling joy and disappointment in equal measure.
A strange game on a bouncy hard pitch. The boys seemed to be intent on playing one touch football, but unfortunately, not by passing to each other. As a result they found themselves under more and more pressure and if it hadn’t been for an inspired performance by Max S in goal, the score would have been significantly higher. When the team did show some composure and actually control and pass the ball, they cut Emmanuel apart. The final pass eluded us but as always the boys effort could not be faulted. A strange performance and one that will require some definite work next week.
Despite a tough 9-1 loss, the U13C team showed determination and resilience throughout the match. Jay V put in a strong defensive performance, making several key stops, and battling hard against relentless opposition attacks.
The team’s lone goal was a testament to their perseverance, offering a bright moment in the game. Though the scoreline was lopsided, the players never gave up, fighting until the final whistle. Their grit and effort will serve them well in future matches. Keep pushing, U13C!
The first team has had an outstanding season, marked by consistent growth and improvement both individually and as a unit. Their hard work has paid off with two 3rd place finishes in major tournaments, putting them in a strong position as they look ahead to nationals.
The team kicked off the weekend with a strong performance on Saturday, showcasing dominant gameplay across all matches. They secured victories against Westonbirt, Stowe, St Paul’s, and Rendcomb, with a draw against St George’s, which saw them top their pool heading into Sunday.
Sunday proved to be more challenging as they faced off against some of the top 16 teams. Adjusting to new umpires and the increased pressure of the competition made it a tough start. The team played two draws against Marlborough and St Alban’s before suffering a loss to Berkhamsted, which meant they finished 2nd in their group. This set up a knockout match against GHS, but despite their best efforts, they were narrowly defeated 2-1.
The girls can be incredibly proud of their achievements this season. After a long weekend of intense competition, with several players carrying injuries, they gave their all and represented Claremont with pride. A special mention goes to Faris H, who at just 13 years old, stepped up to play in an U19 tournament. Additionally, we bid farewell to our three Year 13 players—Ellora, Maddi, and Indie. Your humour, camaraderie, and leadership both on and off the pitch will be missed.
The second team had an outstanding weekend of lacrosse at National Schools this year, starting the first day with 3 nail biting wins, a draw against STAHS and a close loss to St Catherines. These fantastic results led the team into Division 1 for the following day where they faced St Swithuns, Habs and Morton Hall. Overall, the 2nd team made it to the final 16 and should be immensely proud of their performance.
We made Claremont History with the very first 3rd Senior Lacrosse team at this year’s nationals. We have been super impressed with the commitment that so many girls have made to lacrosse this year, especially those who have picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time this year. With our usual goalkeeper playing in a higher team, we recruited Eilidh and Zara into goal and they did such a brilliant job. The team defended hard and managed to maintain a low score-line against Wycombe Abbey and St. Mary’s Calne. We also celebrated an outstanding 2-0 win against GHS and progressed into the second division. It was a highly contested quarter-final against St. Cat’s, where the girls could not have given more and although we just lost 2-3, we could not have felt prouder of the team.
The U15A team has had a fantastic season, putting us in a strong position for the National Schools competition. After facing a challenging set of teams in the group stages, including Queen Anne’s, St Catherines, Caterham, Westonbirt and Haberdashers, Claremont finished in the top two in the pool. This secured our place in the top 16, where we faced Birkenhead in a tough, hard-fought match. Despite our best efforts, we fell short with a 4-2 loss. It has been an incredible season, and the team should feel extremely proud of their achievements!
The U15Bs had a challenging group for their morning games at Nationals. Bolstered by some U14 players however we managed 2 very good score lines against Berkhamstead and Putney. After a scrappy game against Downe House, we finished bottom of the pool and facing a strong St Swithun’s side in the Top 16 knockout round. Despite some fantastic saves by Freja (picked up on and complimented by the opposition coaches) we ended on the wrong side of the scoreline. We then went on to play in the plate QF against St Paul’s. Unfortunately an extended lunch break did not do our energy levels any favours and St Paul’s came out firing. We ended the day on a loss despite some promising play at both ends of the field in the group stages and some standout moments from every player who attended.
The U14As had a fantastic day at the National Schools. They started the group stages well with wins against Sherborne and NLCS, SHSK and Marlborough College. Across all the games there was some good hustle in the midfield and teamwork in attack. Our defence managed to shut out Marlborough completely. The final group game was against St Swithun’s. Claremont stepped up to the challenge of going 2 goals down in the first half and pulled the game back. The final minute had Claremont chasing down a 3-2 scoreline to try and bring the score to even. An excellent goal by Eloise meant we drew this final game and topped our group going into knockouts where a strong Berkhamsted side was waiting. Berkhamsted scored first but Claremont pulled it back with two fantastic team goals. Berkhamsted were not to be outdone however and managed to score in the last minute of the game making it a 2-2 draw. Unfortunately, due to the tournament rules, with the score at a draw at the end of regulation time and as Berkhamsted scored first they would go through to the Quarter Finals.
The U13A lacrosse team had a stormer of a day at their first Nationals Schools lacrosse. The team won came away from their pool having won all of their games, bar one draw to Bedford Girls’ School, meaning they came top in their pool. Following this, they were drawn against Queen Anne’s were they stay calm and composed and came away with a 5-2 win! The quarter-final saw Claremont face a tough Berkhamsted side and unfortunately came away with a loss. The girls should be very happy with their result, coming one of the top 8 schools in the country!
