The belvedere was constructed in 1717, by Sir John Vanbrugh. The word originates from the Italian words ‘bel’ which means beautiful and ‘vedere’ which means view. This raised natural ridge on the Claremont estate is an ideal location to build this ‘building with a view’.

The belvedere’s structure has changed little over time but is an amazing landmark. Sir Paul McCartney even used this building to feature in the video to his song ‘Waterfalls’.
