Sports round-up
·14 February 2025
Sadly the relentless weather put paid to any football either at home or away matches last weekend. We have a full block of fixtures forecast against Claires Court this coming Saturday 8th February.
On Saturday, we made our way to Benenden for the Southeast School’s Festival, ready to take on some of the best teams in the region. The group stages kicked off with some intense and exciting games. We had hard-fought draws against Berkhamsted and Putney, picked up wins against LEH and Wally Hall, but unfortunately, we suffered a narrow loss to St George’s in our final group match. That left us sitting in third place in the group, which meant we were heading into the quarterfinals.
Next up, we faced GHS—and let me tell you, it was some of the best hustle and intensity the first team has shown all season. The energy was electric, and we came out on top with a dominant 5-0 victory. The girls were firing on all cylinders, and it was an absolute joy to watch.
In the semifinal, we got off to a slow start against St Cats, struggling to maintain possession, quickly finding ourselves down 4-0. But credit to the team—we didn’t give up. After switching up our tactics, we fought back hard and brought the game to 4-3. With just a couple of minutes left, we were a player up and had a real chance to tie it up. Unfortunately, our woman-up attack didn’t quite work as planned, and we lost possession, ultimately ending the game 4-3 in St Cat’s favour. It was a nail-biting finish, and it felt like it could have gone either way, especially with the potential for overtime. Despite the tough semifinal loss, we finished the day in third place overall—a great result! The team played brilliantly, gained some invaluable experience, and built up a lot of confidence for Nationals next month. We’ve got plenty to take away from the tournament, and we’re all feeling pumped and ready for what’s next!
On a chilly Saturday morning, the mighty 3rd team travelled away to take on one of the strongest schools in the land. The team started well, with excellent passing from Mili and Pearl. Strong defence from Lucy and Elina made the opposition work hard. Silly errors from Claremont didn’t help but the team remained positive. Fairs in goal demonstrated her hard working ethos and halted the home teams attackers. A strong second half proved to the team that they can link well when they are consistent with their skills.
It was a challenging start to the game as Berkhamsted came out strong, netting the first three goals and putting us on the back foot early on. Despite the setback, we showed great resilience and fought
our way back into the contest. Determined to close the gap, we battled hard, and by half-time, we had clawed our way back to 6-5, keeping the game well within reach. However, as the second half wore on, our fitness levels began to tell. Berkhamsted took advantage, and despite our best efforts, we struggled to maintain the same intensity. While we continued to push, the opposition managed to pull ahead, making it a tough finish for us. Plenty of positives to take forward as we continue to improve!
The U15Bs travelled away to play one of the strongest sides in England. Early errors from Claremont saw the home team capitalise on easy goals. The team battled hard to transition the ball from defence to attack. Ground balls cost the team in the first half. After a strong team talk at half time, saw the team rally hard and create numerous attacking opportunities. Matilda ran hard with the ball and on one leg Olivia scored the final goal of the game. Hard work on core skills will see this side improve.
A very competitive match against our opposition, which was goal for goal up until the final minute. It was a very scrappy game in parts, as the mud and conditions of the pitch was tough to play on. Early injuries from Liv C, Elsie and Purdy made for urgency and change in formation. However, the girls adapted well and worked on taking the ball around the goal to open up space, good effort!
Arriving with about two minutes to spare and with only one sub. The 14B’s had a tremendous game and a fantastic win. This was a complete team performance with amazing drive, determination and work ethic. The opposition were complacent, whilst Claremont battled in, with standout performances from Jess, Aja and Sienna. All the girls should be proud of themselves today as it was a full team effort for a full 40 minutes. Well done!!
The U13B had a great and physical game today. Points down in the first half, the team looked at driving and cutting in the fan in the attack and working on communication better as a team. The result – an incredible come back and a 3-2 win. Well done to all involved!
A fantastic 7-3 win showcased our ability to settle the ball well and control the game from start to finish. From the first whistle, we played with confidence, moving the ball smoothly and creating plenty of chances. Our teamwork and composure were key to securing the win, though theres still room for improvement especially in our shooting, where we could have converted even more opportunities. A special mention to Pippa H, who put in an outstanding performance, making a real impact on the game. A great result and plenty to build on for the next match!
The U12 B Team faced a tough challenge in their recent match, but they showed great resilience and determination, despite the 10-4 margin. The girls worked hard and made some excellent drives toward the goal, showcasing their skills and teamwork. Despite the final score, they played with heart and gave their best effort throughout the game. Well done to the U12B team for their hard work and commitment! Keep up the great effort, girls! POM – Rebecca H and Isla C
It was a nail-biting game for our Year 7s, with the final score a dramatic 10-11. The girls played exceptionally well, showing great determination and teamwork throughout the match. A standout moment was their beautiful drive toward the goal area, leading to some well-converted goals. Despite the loss, the team had a lot of fun and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. Congratulations to the U/12 C team for their hard work and effort! Keep up the fantastic work, girls! POM – Gigi and Diana
Lost 11-9. The Senior Netball B Team had an intense match against St Theresas, and it was a very even contest throughout. The girls showed great teamwork and skill, moving the ball down the court with precision and determination. Whilst the final result didn’t go in our favour, the effort and sportsmanship displayed by our team were commendable. Well done to all the players for their hard work and dedication on the court! Keep up the fantastic effort, team!
Claremont was honoured to host the U12 Sisters in Sport netball semifinals today, and what a game it was! Our girls played with incredible skill, determination, and teamwork, securing a fantastic 23-8 victory against James Allen’s Girls’ School. Their hard work and passion shone through every pass and goal, earning them a well-deserved place in the upcoming final.
On Thursday, the U12s and U13s a competed in surrey schools’ tournament where both teams had a great day out with lots of fixtures and the U12s coming top two in their pool!
Our U14 squad opened the Sevens season at the Downsend tournament on a chill afternoon in Reigate, the heavy surface testament to the relentless rain of the past few weeks. Four fast and furious matches against Box Hill, Downsend, Dunnotar and Reigate, tested endurance and stamina, the 12 strong squad regularly rotated to maintain strength across the field. Claremont were too strong for each opponent, scoring tries a plenty, conceding just two across the four matches.
There will be far sterner tests ahead as the term evolves, but this was an excellent start. Tries tended to be individual lung busters, exposing some naivety, the team yet to exploit ball transfer into space and avoidance of contact, but this will come the more they train and compete together. Mud splattered, tired and happy, the squad will have slept well on a job well done.
