Sue Quayle (Bradford)

“I attended Claremont School from 1948 til 1954, from the age of 11 to 17. I have very fond memories of my time at school.

At the time I was there the school was run as a Christian Science school. We had 15 minutes between getting up and breakfast when we all read the same passage from the Bible and Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy in the class room and this was overseen by a prefect.

I was particularly fond of sport in general but especially tennis for which I was captain. The headmistress took me to Wimbledon as a privilege of being captain we saw the Men’s Finals Other loves were netball and hockey and I often played matches home and away. Swimming was another favourite.

On a Friday evening the guides ran a meeting in the school for pupils and others from outside which I joined. One of the perks being I didn’t have to do Friday prep! The guides stayed with me after my school days as when I was married and living in Germany I was in charge of about 4000 guides all over Germany which I so enjoyed and took part in visiting them all, taking part in training and camping with them The art department was in a separate building and my time there set me up for my love of art till this day. I would often be found on holiday painting view and buildings. When in Bonn with my husband I found an art class and learnt to paint on China, I have done it ever since.

The other thing was drama I did not have elocution so I was not able to be in a School Play but I was in The Amateur Dramatic Society as Charles Bingley in I Have  Five Daughters.

We had a Pets Enclosure and I had a grey guinea pig called Micky but ‘she’ then had a baby so I really had to change her name!

I loved School but was rather hopeless at school work! I stayed on in the 6 Form to retake a failed O level! But I was a prefect and vice captain of Radnor my House.

I came back to an Old Girls reunion and have a lovely photo of us all the steps out side bringing back such Happy Memories.”
